The regionof South Moravia

Moravia, especially its southern part, is a traditional winemaking region. Vine growing dates back to the third century A.D., the era of roman colonization. The peak of its development was in crusader’s time. Nowadays the total vineyards’ area is more than 15 000 ha

The original character of Moravian wines, their fruity and fresh aroma, is influenced by specific soil-climatic conditions of this region. The total area of Vinselekt Michlovsky’s vineyards is about 130 ha, they are located in Mikulovska and Velko Pavlovska sub regions.

The Pavlov hills in Palava region are among unique natural areas that dominate the surrounding landscape and are the marginal spurs of Alps. Climate here is very similar to Mediterranean one, and this region is the warmest in South Moravia. Palavian flora and fauna are unique that is why here you can find nature reserve under the protection of UNESCO.

The local warm and dry climate is suitable not just for the members of flora and fauna but along with soil conditions it determines winemaking tendencies as well. At the foot of Palavian hills with its limy soils is situated Mikulovska wine region. Limy subsoil layer and warm climate of these best Moravian vineyards add to Milos Michlovsky’s wines original mineral character, special fruity aromas, fullness and longitude.

More than 80% of vineyards are made up by white varieties. Traditional varieties such as Riesling, Welschriesling and Gruner Veltliner organically supplement Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay varieties that grow very well on limy soils. The wines from Sauvignon blanc and Gruner Silvaner varieties are exquisite, Pinot Gris expresses itself excellently, and the best sites are for Riesling and Neuburger varieties. Regional aromatic variety called Palava is unique indeed. The share of red winegrape varieties is rather small here; the most common varieties are Lemberger and Pinot noir.
